Cabinet refinishing is the highest-return job in residential painting and the easiest one to get badly wrong. Kitchen cabinets are touched with wet hands, hit with cooking grease and slammed several thousand times a year. A finish that would be perfectly adequate on a hallway wall will chip off a cabinet door edge within a season.

Assessment, is refinishing the right call?
Solid wood, MDF and sound veneer all refinish beautifully. Peeling thermofoil and water-swollen particleboard do not, and we will tell you when replacement is the honest answer even though it means we lose the job.

Removal and mapping
Every door, drawer front and hinge is numbered against a map of the kitchen. Reinstallation is not a guessing game, the door that came off opening 14 goes back on opening 14.

Degrease, twice
The step that gets skipped. Cooking oil deposits are invisible and they will cause adhesion failure months later, long after the crew has been paid and gone.

Sand, fill, prime
Scuff-sand to break the sheen, fill any dents, and prime with a bonding primer rated specifically for cabinetry. Oak gets grain-filled if you want the smooth modern look rather than open grain.

Questions
Full FAQIs painting kitchen cabinets actually worth it?
If the boxes are sound and the layout works, yes, it is the highest-return renovation dollar in a GTA kitchen. Refinishing typically costs 20–30% of replacement for a visually comparable result, and takes a week rather than six. If the layout is wrong, the boxes are failing, or you need different door sizes, paint cannot fix that and you should put the money into replacement instead.
How long will painted cabinets last?
Eight to fifteen years with a properly degreased, primed and sprayed finish, comparable to a factory finish. The failure mode to watch is not wear in the middle of the door, it is chipping along the top edge and around the handle. Both come from inadequate degreasing or from rehanging doors before the coating has hardened, which is why we cure on racks.
Can you paint oak cabinets without the grain showing?
Yes, but it is an added step and an added cost. Open oak grain will telegraph straight through paint unless it is filled first, a separate grain-filling and sanding pass across every door face. Some clients want the grain to read through, which is a legitimate look and cheaper. We price both so you can choose rather than being surprised.
Do I lose my kitchen for a week?
You lose the doors, not the kitchen. Boxes stay in place and usable, the appliances stay connected and the counters stay clear for use. You will be living with open shelving for five to seven days while the doors are being sprayed and cured off-site.
Why spray instead of brush and roll?
Because a cabinet door is examined from eighteen inches away in direct kitchen light. At that distance brush marks and roller stipple are obvious, and the flat, atomised film that spraying produces is the entire point of the exercise. Anyone quoting a brushed cabinet job at a spray price is selling you the wrong finish.
