The local picture

Whitby carries a wider age spread than its Durham neighbours. Downtown Whitby and the Brock Street corridor have genuinely old housing, pre-1920 frame and brick homes with the prep requirements that implies. Brooklin to the north is almost entirely recent subdivision construction.

Housing stock

Pre-1920 frame and brick housing in downtown Whitby, 1980s–2000s subdivisions across the core, and predominantly post-2005 construction in Brooklin.

What shapes a Whitby quote

  • 01

    Downtown heritage prep

Pre-1920 stock carries multi-layer paint history, likely lead in lower layers, and plaster walls. Careful hand prep, and abatement referral where stripping would disturb lead.

  • 02

    Brooklin new-build settlement

Recent construction cracks at butt joints and above openings in the second and third winters as framing dries. Tape it, do not fill it.

  • 03

    Brick and frame exteriors downtown

Older brick needs a vapour-permeable masonry coating, and painting it is effectively permanent. We have that conversation before quoting.

FAQ

Painting in Whitby, answered

We have a century home in downtown Whitby. What is different about painting it?

Three things. The walls are likely lath-and-plaster, which fails at the keys behind the lath rather than simply cracking on the surface, so it needs re-anchoring and skimming rather than filling. The trim carries many layers of historic paint, and the lower layers on anything pre-1980 are likely to contain lead, meaning careful hand preparation rather than power sanding, and abatement referral if the job genuinely needs stripping. And the whole house moves seasonally, so cracks need reinforcing tape or they simply reopen.

Why is a Brooklin quote cheaper than a downtown Whitby quote for the same size house?

Because the prep is a fraction of the work. A 2018 Brooklin home has sound drywall, a known trim finish and no lead history, the job is a genuine two-coat upgrade over thin builder paint. A downtown century home needs plaster stabilisation, multi-layer trim preparation and careful handling of lead-bearing layers before anything gets painted. Same square footage, materially different labour, so a single rate card for both would mean overcharging one of them.

How much does painting cost in the GTA?

We do not publish prices, because a number quoted without seeing your walls is a guess. What decides the cost is ceiling height, how much trim you have, and the condition of the substrate, none of which can be judged from square footage. The walkthrough is free, takes about 45 minutes, and ends with a fixed written quote.

Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. The walkthrough takes 45 to 60 minutes, costs nothing, and carries no obligation. You receive a written finish specification within 48 hours that names every surface, its coat count, its primer decision and its sheen. We would rather you compared that document against other quotes than compared bottom-line numbers, because three painting quotes are usually three different scopes.

What areas do you serve?

The Greater Toronto Area, the City of Toronto including Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, plus Peel, York, Durham and Halton regions. That covers Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Newmarket and Aurora. If you are inside the GTA, we quote it.
